Modes of C♯

The seven church modes, all rooted on C♯. Pick a mode to hear it and see its engraved shape — Ionian / Dorian / Phrygian / Lydian / Mixolydian / Aeolian / Locrian, each on C♯.

C♯ Ionian

The 'major' mode — the bright pre-tonal default.

C♯ Dorian

Minor with a raised 6th — the wistful jazz/folk mode.

C♯ Phrygian

Minor with a lowered 2nd — Spanish, dark, modal jazz.

C♯ Lydian

Major with a raised 4th — the bright, floating mode.

C♯ Mixolydian

Major with a lowered 7th — folk, blues-rock, dominant.

C♯ Aeolian

Natural minor. The other 'default' tonality.

C♯ Locrian

Diminished tonic. Rare; theoretical more than practical.
